SMARTs (Scientific Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques)

Dog Getting Acupuncture

This fun acronym means we will be adding some intriguing treatment modalities to our available care options. The highlight of this group is Acupuncture which has been around for ages as a part of Eastern medicine, but we are now understanding how it works from a scientific aspect and utilizing it in our Western Veterinary medicine. Acupuncture is using special needles placed in strategic points along the body depending on what we want to stimulate. We are able to affect function throughout the entire body based on where we place our needles. The "related techniques" involves adding massage and laser therapy to the acupuncture protocol. There are cases we can use these other two modalities in combination with the acupuncture needles , and others we will use laser or massage targeted at our acupuncture points without the needles.

Here are just a handful of things that can be treated using our SMARTs:

  • Spinal cord injury
  • Back/neck pain
  • Digestive disorders
  • Lameness
  • Urine incontinence
  • Arthritis
  • Edema/swelling
  • Post surgical pain
  • Trauma
  • Skin disease
  • Behavior issues

We are very excited to be able to offer more options in treating your animals. When we use SMARTs, it can be used alone; but it's most often combined with traditional medical practices for a well-rounded approach. Many times it allows us to use less medication which is always better long term for our patients. It's the perfect addition to the high quality medicine we are already committed to using on our patients. We are looking forward to using our SMARTs!
